Oxygen index ( LOI )

Fire test to determine the oxygen index

Testing of the oxygen index according to ISO 4589-2 is conducted by measuring the minimum oxygen content of an oxygen/nitrogen mixture necessary to sustain the combustion of a vertically mounted sample. The resulting oxygen concentration is referred to as (limiting) oxygen index. Measurements of the LOI provide a sensitive measure for the burning behavior of materials under controlled laboratory conditions which makes it particularly useful for quality control.
