Fire test to determine the oxygen index (LOI)
The GWP tests the method for determining the minimum volume fraction of oxygen in mixtures with nitrogen at which combustion is supported vertically under specified test conditions according to ISO 4589-2. The test results of this fire test are defined as oxygen index values. These methods are suitable for solid and multi-layer materials. For comparison purposes, a method is given to determine whether the oxygen index of a material is above a specified minimum value. Oxygen index results can provide a sensitive measure of the burning behaviour of materials under certain controlled laboratory conditions and can thus be useful in quality control.
