Light microscopy of unetched sections

The GWP also offers examinations of unetched metallographic sections using light microscopy in order to obtain important information about the material, the manufacturing process and its properties. Even without etching, numerous features can be analyzed that provide information about the material structure and possible causes of damage.

The most important aspects examined in light microscopy on unetched sections include:

  • graphite formations: The shape and distribution of graphite, especially in cast iron, provides information about the material properties.
  • Non-metallic inclusions: These can provide information about the purity of the material and the manufacturing process.
  • Coatings: The thickness and uniformity of coatings can be checked to evaluate the quality of surface treatments.
  • porosities: Voids and air inclusions can indicate manufacturing defects or material weaknesses.
  • crack paths: In damage analysis, the progression of cracks is examined in order to identify the causes of fractures and other defects.

Light microscopy on unetched sections therefore offers a quick and effective way to gain an initial assessment of the material and its potential defects. GWP's expertise in metallography enables precise and well-founded analysis.
