The grain size and grain orientation are decisive parameters for evaluating the mechanical and technological properties of a material.
For this purpose, a material sample is taken, if possible, along the rolling direction and prepared metallographically. The microstructure is then made visible using a specific grain boundary etching agent.
Using a light microscope, the grain structure can be compared with standard series images and assigned a corresponding grain size index.
Alternatively, an outpatient sample preparation and microstructure etching can be carried out without directly destroying the component. A microstructure impression is created using foils for light microscopic examination.
