The FMVSS 302 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 302) is a US standard that regulates the ignition behavior of materials in the vehicle interior. It specifies how much flames can spread on interior fittings such as seats, trim or carpets in order to ensure safety in the event of a fire. The main goal of the standard is to limit the spread of flames in order to give occupants more time to escape from the vehicle in the event of a fire.
The test method covers the horizontal flammability of materials, whereby the maximum burning rate must not exceed 102 mm per minute.
