Assessment of Graphite Formation in Cast Iron

In addition to steels, cast irons with their graphite formation are important iron materials. Their alloys are characterized by good castability and machinability. The characteristic structural feature is the formation of a graphite phase, which has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of the cast parts. Depending on the formation, a distinction is made between the various cast irons, such as those with lamellar graphite (GG), globular graphite (GGG) or vermicular graphite (GGV).

With the help of comparative images, the shape, size and arrangement of the graphite are microscopically evaluated and classified (DIN EN ISO 945-1). This results in a generally valid designation of the cast materials, which is understood throughout the industry.
