Airbag dust analysis: dust fractionation with Andersen impactor

Airbag dust analysis: According to the standards AK-ZV01 and SAE J1794, the particles emitted after the ignition of vehicle restraint systems must be characterized in terms of their mass and properties. In addition to the concentration of the total dust, the size distribution of the emitted particles, the proportion of respirable dust (PM10) and its chemical composition are important here.

In the GWP method, the total dust is classified into nine sizes between < 0,4 µm and > 9 µm using an Andersen impactor. If the quantity is sufficient (> 50 mg), the collected dust can then be analyzed for various chemical parameters (soluble fraction, pH value, heavy metals). At the customer's request, the morphology of the particles (nodular or fibrous, possible quartz content) can also be examined using an electron microscope.

– Airbag dust analysis according to AK-ZV 01: 2001-10
– 8-stage fractionation of dust by impaction (baffle plate)
– Particle size range 0 – 10 µm
– gravimetric evaluation (resolution approx. 100 µg)
– Impact partner aluminum, optionally glass, stainless steel, ...
– Installation location 2,7/2,5 m3 tank or customer vehicle
optional on request:
– impacted particles (airbag dust) can be examined for elemental composition (if > 50 mg mass; analysis is carried out in cooperation with partner laboratory)
– impacted particles can be examined for morphology by SEM (e.g. fibers)
