GWP in Munich operates the largest independent metallography laboratory in southern Germany. Metallographic examinations are used both in quality assurance and in damage analysis. In classic metallography, sample cross-sections are created, embedded in synthetic resin and the surfaces are then ground and polished. Special contrasting methods, such as etching, make material structures (microstructures) visible and can be examined using a light microscope or scanning electron microscope (SEM).
The EDX system connected to the SEM also enables the chemical analysis of material compositions close to the surface. The core competencies of the accredited metallography laboratory include the examination of a wide range of metallic materials, fiber composites and electronic components in the areas of quality assurance and damage analysis.
