Notched bar impact testing and impact strength testing on metals and plastics: In our accredited laboratories we can cover a wide range of standard tests and customer-specific special requests
The notched bar impact test is a material testing method for determining the impact energy consumed by metallic materials. The notched bar impact strength of many metallic materials is temperature-dependent, so notched bar impact tests must be carried out at a specified temperature. If a test temperature other than room temperature is used, the sample must be tempered to the intended temperature under controlled conditions.
The Charpy notched bar impact test is used to assess the toughness of plastics under sudden stress. It is standardized in DIN EN ISO 179. It is carried out on notched (determination of the Charpy notched bar impact strength acN ) and unnotched (determination of the Charpy impact strength acU ) test specimens in three-point support. The notch sensitivity can be calculated from the impact strength and the notched bar impact strength.
