Defence | Examinations for military and aerospace

There are a number of tests specifically designed for military and aerospace equipment to protect these systems from malfunctions and other potential problems, such as environmental simulation. We also actively support industry in the development phase. For example, we characterize complex welds for rocket launch systems and evaluate the materials used. Our fully equipped laboratory - with computer tomography, metallography and material testing - enables a wide range of tests that are crucial for development.

Laboratory Tests for the Defense Industry (Defence)

In the defense industry, laboratory testing is crucial to ensure the safety, performance and durability of equipment, materials and systems. Our tests cover various aspects such as material strength, corrosion resistance, electronic components, explosives and much more.

Material testing is essential to ensure that all materials used meet the required specifications and standards.

  • Strength tests:

    • tensile strength, compressive strength, bending
    • hardness tests (e.g. Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell)
    • Fatigue tests (to determine the service life of components)

  • Corrosion tests:

    • Salt spray test (conditioning of materials under salt stress)
    • environmental simulation tests (temperature changes, humidity, UV radiation)
    • Coating testing (e.g. resistance of paints and surface coatings)

  • impact resistance:

    • Impact strength tests of metals and plastics (e.g. Charpy and Izod tests)

  • Material fatigue and life analysis:

    • Testing the resilience of materials over a long period of time under dynamic conditions.

Electronic systems and components must be extremely robust and reliable, especially in military applications that operate under extreme conditions.

  • Temperature and humidity tests:

    • Testing the functionality and robustness of electronics under extreme temperatures and humidity (e.g. environmental simulations, thermal shock tests).
  • Vibration and shock tests:

    • Tests to determine the resistance of electronic devices to vibration and shock (e.g. in vehicles, missiles or equipment in the field).
  • Battery and energy storage tests:

    • Tests on the service life, capacity and safety of batteries, especially for use in military equipment.

The development of weapons, ammunition and explosives requires precise and safe testing procedures.

  • Explosives tests:

    • Tests to determine the sensitivity, stability and performance of explosives.
    • Testing the ignition mechanisms and ignition reliability.

  • Bullet resistance:

    • Testing the ballistics and bullet resistance of armor, vehicles or buildings.

  • Explosion and fire tests:

    • Tests to investigate the behavior of materials and equipment in explosions or fires

Weapons and ammunition must undergo a variety of tests to ensure their effectiveness and safety.

  • Ballistic tests:

    • Testing protective materials and armor parts against projectiles.

The integrity and security of defense equipment must be ensured at all times.

  • Non-destructive testing (NDT):

    • Computed tomography, X-ray, ultrasound and magnetic particle testing to inspect materials and components without damaging them.

  • Toxicity tests:

    • Investigation of the hazards of chemicals and materials used in the arms industry (e.g. in the production of protective equipment).

  • Safety and functional tests:

    • review of security mechanisms

Defense products must be tested in realistic scenarios to ensure their suitability for use in the field.

  • field simulations:

    • Testing equipment under extreme conditions such as desert, arctic mountain range, jungle (climate testing)

  • Long-term test and reliability:

    • Testing of equipment for long-term stability and functionality under continuous use. Development of customer-specific tests.

Testing of chemical materials is critical to protecting troops and equipment.

  • Chemical analyses:

    • Determination of chemical ingredients in materials or equipment (e.g. resistance of protective clothing to chemical warfare agents).
