Investigation of the filler content in filter plates

Problem:
To characterize membrane filter plates for recycling, the filler content and material composition were investigated.

Investigation strategy:
A step-by-step analysis of the particle structure and composition was performed.

Results:

  1. Material determination using FTIR spectroscopy:
    • The filter plates are made of polypropylene (PP).
  2. Determination of the filler content in GRP using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA):
    • The mass loss is 72 mass%.
    • This results in a filler content of 28% by mass.
  3. Characterization of the filler using SEM-EDX:
    • The filler was identified as silicate short glass fibers.

Conclusion:
The membrane filter plates examined consist of polypropylene with a filler content of 28% by mass. The filler contained is silicate short glass fibers.
